Punjab is set to enter a new era of railway transport with the launch of its first fast train. The initiative promises faster travel and improved connectivity across the province.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi have signed a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways.
The agreement marks a significant step toward modernizing the province’s railway infrastructure and introducing high-speed travel.
To connect Lahore and Rawalpindi
Under the agreement, Pakistan’s first fast train will operate between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The train is expected to complete the journey in just two hours and 15 minutes, drastically reducing travel time between the two major cities.
This development is being seen as a milestone in the country’s transport sector.
In addition to the flagship fast train, modern trains will also be introduced on eight local routes across Punjab, improving regional connectivity. One of the routes will run from Shahdara to Narowal, covering a distance of 79 kilometers. Another line will connect Narowal to Sialkot over 62 kilometers.
Major intercity rail corridors
A new long-distance route spanning 370 kilometers will connect Raiwind, Kasur, Pakpattan, and Lodhran. This corridor is expected to significantly improve access between southern and central Punjab.
Another 220-kilometer route will link Sheikhupura, Jaranwala, and Shorkot, further strengthening the rail network.
Rail travel will also be introduced on a 68-kilometer route from Faisalabad via Chak Jhumra and Shaheenabad, offering better mobility for commuters in the region.
Moreover, a major 303-kilometer railway project connecting Kot Addu, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Kashmore has been included in the plan, expanding connectivity to southern areas.
Millions expected to benefit
Authorities estimate that around 90 million people will benefit from these nine railway routes. The initiative is expected to ease travel, boost economic activity, and provide a reliable alternative to road transport.
