Pakistan has overhauled key judicial bodies under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, reconstituting the Supreme Judicial Council, the Judicial Commission, and the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Committee.
The reorganization was carried out by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court Aminuddin Khan.
Under the new arrangement, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi will head the Supreme Judicial Council, with Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan serving as the second senior member.
Justice Jamal Mandokhail has been appointed to both the Supreme Judicial Council and the Practice and Procedure Committee, while Justice Aamir Farooq has joined the Judicial Commission. Justices Munib Akhtar, Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Jamal Mandokhail will also serve as members of the Judicial Council.
The Judicial Commission now includes Supreme Court’s senior-most judge Justice Munib Akhtar, along with Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Aamir Farooq of the Federal Shariat Court. The Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, and four parliamentarians - two each from the government and the opposition - will also participate in the Commission’s proceedings.
Additionally, a female member nominated by the Speaker of the National Assembly and a lawyer nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council have been included.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi will also chair the reconstituted Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Committee, with Justices Munib Akhtar and Jamal Mandokhail serving alongside him. The restructuring marks a significant step in reshaping Pakistan's judicial administration and strengthening the framework for judicial oversight and appointments.
