The Punjab government has continued efforts to reduce smog across the provincial capital, ensuring strict implementation of the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) protocols at various construction sites.
According to details surfaced on Friday, to minimise the impact of dust during development and construction projects, the administration has installed protective green sheets and arranged for regular water sprinkling through tankers every hour.
Authorities from the Environment Protection Department and the police have expanded operations against those violating the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set to combat environmental pollution. Citizens have also shared mixed reactions to the government’s anti-smog measures.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert warning of dense smog in Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib and Faisalabad. The authority has also forecast heavy smog in Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Khanpur.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, the intensity of smog is expected to rise from November to mid-December, as predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). He cautioned that smog could lead to respiratory and other health issues, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
Kathia urged citizens to support the government’s anti-smog campaign by following precautionary measures and wearing masks. He warned that cases would be registered against those burning crop residues and waste materials.
He said that joint efforts of public institutions and citizens were essential to eliminate smog. The DG further mentioned that burning solid waste, tyres, plastics, polythene bags, rubber and leather was strictly prohibited.
He directed authorities to conduct a firm crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles and industrial units, adding that reducing environmental pollution could help prevent several diseases.
