Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar-led caretaker government on Wednesday gave the green light to the country's inaugural National Space Policy.

The policy, unveiled in Islamabad with a caretaker premier at the helm, opens the door for international companies to offer communication and coordination services to consumers within Pakistan.

Int’l collaboration through satellites

Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Murtaza Solangi, revealed that international companies would operate through Low-Orbit Communication satellites, ushering in a new era of collaboration in the space sector.

This approach is poised not only to attract foreign investment but also to alleviate the burden on foreign exchange previously expended on the costs associated with these services.

Economic benefits and regulatory advancements

Mr Solangi emphasised that the implementation of the National Space Policy is expected to have far-reaching economic benefits, while simultaneously advancing Pakistan's standing in the global space community.

The policy includes provisions to establish a Space Regulatory regime in line with international standards, ensuring that Pakistan aligns itself with best practices in the rapidly evolving space industry.

Furthermore, the Minister disclosed that funds have been earmarked for research and development initiatives within the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

Pharmaceutical industry reforms postponed

Shifting focus, Solangi addressed the issue of drug prices, revealing that the Federal Cabinet opted to postpone a decision by the Economic Coordination Committee to increase medicine rates.

The Cabinet has directed a comprehensive review of the price-fixing mechanism and regulations, seeking a lasting solution to this critical issue.

Meanwhile, Mr Kakar emphasised the government's commitment to progress and development in the pharmaceutical sector, asserting that there will be no compromise on safeguarding public interests and ensuring the quality of drugs.

In another significant development, it was decided to refer Dow Dental College Karachi, Narowal Medical College, Liaquat Institute of Medical Health Sciences Thatta, and Khairpur Mirs Medical College to the Pakistan Medical and Dental College for preliminary approval.
