On the occasion of the Chinese New Year 2026, President Asif Ali Zardari praised Pakistan-China ties, emphasizing the country’s support for the One China Policy and China’s principled position on Kashmir, calling the bilateral relationship an “all-weather strategic partnership.”
President Zardari, in a message from the President’s Office, congratulated the people and leadership of the People’s Republic of China on the start of the Year of the Horse, symbolizing energy, progress, and perseverance. He noted that these qualities mirror the enduring friendship between the two countries.
The year 2026 also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China, which began in 1951. Over seven decades, the two nations have cultivated cooperation rooted in mutual respect, trust, and a shared strategic vision.
Zardari recalled historical ties, highlighting that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the last world leader to meet Chairman Mao Zedong, symbolizing the foundation of the strong bilateral bond that continues to guide Pakistan-China relations.
Support on core national interests
The President reaffirmed that Pakistan has consistently supported the One China Policy, while China has maintained a principled stance on Pakistan’s core concerns, including Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that China advocates a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with UN Charter principles and Security Council resolutions.
Zardari also shared his personal experience, noting that during his first presidential term (2008–2013), he visited China multiple times, reflecting Pakistan’s priority in maintaining close ties with Beijing.
Strategic cooperation
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistan and China have expanded cooperation across defense, security, and economic sectors. Zardari highlighted that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is entering a new phase, promoting infrastructure, industrialization, and regional connectivity.
He also praised China’s leadership in multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), recognizing its role in fostering regional security, economic cooperation, and stability in Eurasia.
Zardari noted that his visits to China last year strengthened mutual strategic trust and opened new avenues for collaboration in economy, technology, and culture. He expressed anticipation of future visits to further enhance bilateral cooperation.
He reiterated that Pakistan and China are “tried and tested brothers” who support each other in both favorable and challenging times, and that this partnership remains a source of strength for both nations.
