In a major decision ahead of Basant festivities, authorities in Lahore have allowed the use of rooftops of government schools for celebrations. The move comes with detailed safety guidelines, supervision plans, and mandatory parental permission for students.
The District Education Authority (DEA) has approved Basant celebrations on the rooftops of all boys’ government elementary schools in Lahore. A formal notification has been issued to schools outlining conditions and responsibilities.

Officials said the decision aims to allow cultural celebrations while ensuring student safety.
Four-member committee formed
The District Education Authority has constituted a four-member Basant committee to oversee arrangements. The committee will inspect school rooftops, review safety measures, and assess the number of students participating.
The committee will also monitor compliance with the issued guidelines before and during the celebrations.
Age limit, parental permission
According to the DEA, students below the age of five will not be allowed to participate in Basant activities on school rooftops. All participating students must bring written permission from their parents or guardians.

Authorities said this step is essential to ensure parental awareness and responsibility.
The presence of teachers in schools will be mandatory during Basant celebrations. Duty rosters for school staff will be formally arranged to ensure proper supervision throughout the event.
Officials stressed that no activity will be allowed without adequate staff oversight.
Coordination with emergency, civic depts
The Basant Committee will remain in constant coordination with WAPDA, the health department, Rescue services, and the district administration. This coordination is aimed at addressing any emergency or safety concern promptly.
The DEA said all arrangements are being finalised to ensure a safe and well-managed Basant.
