The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a severe cold wave alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, urging the public and relevant institutions to take immediate precautionary steps.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority, extremely cold weather conditions are expected during night and morning hours in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir until the end of January.
The authority warned that temperatures could drop significantly, increasing health and safety risks for residents in these regions.
Roads, power, transport
NDMA said moderate to heavy snowfall is likely in upper parts of the country, which could severely impact road connectivity, transport systems and electricity supply.
Officials cautioned that prolonged snowfall may lead to temporary road closures and delays in essential services.
Avalanche risk, crop damage
The alert also highlighted a heightened risk of avalanches in mountainous areas due to expected snowfall. In some plain areas, hailstorms could damage crops and gardens, raising concerns for farmers and local communities.
NDMA strongly advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in mountainous and snow-prone regions. Motorists have been directed to use safety chains on vehicle tyres in snowy areas to reduce the risk of accidents.
Safety guidelines
Citizens were urged to use warm clothing and heaters carefully during extreme cold to prevent health hazards and fire incidents.
NDMA also directed provincial authorities and district administrations to take preventive measures and ensure the availability of necessary machinery to respond to emergencies.
