The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday granted transit bail to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zartaj Gul preventing her potential arrest in any ongoing cases.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice, expressing concern for justice delivery, remarked, "If I cannot give justice to anyone, I should resign."
He questioned whether Zartaj Gul would have spent the entire night in the High Court if he hadn't intervened.
The Court was attended by the Chief Commissioner of Police (CCPO) Peshawar and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations. CCPO Peshawar assured the court that Zartaj Gul is not wanted in any case, and there is no intention to arrest her.
Chief Justice Ibrahim Khan sternly stated, "If any of our lawyers are wronged, I will hold a court even at 3 o'clock in the night."
The petitioner, Zartaj Gul, expressed apprehension that she might still be arrested despite the bail. In response, the Chief Justice advised her to inform the court and the Inspector General (IG) if such an incident occurs.
Subsequently, the court granted bail to Zartaj Gul, emphasising that she should not be arrested in any case. Additionally, Zartaj Gul was directed to deposit a bond of Rs1 lac by noon the following day.
In response to the incident, Chief Justice Ibrahim Khan took proactive measures by forming a committee under the chairmanship of his Personal Security Officer (PSO). This committee will investigate the alleged misconduct by policemen towards lawyers.
Meanwhile, the CCPO and SSP Operations were also summoned to appear before the committee and were instructed to take appropriate action against the implicated police personnel based on evidence provided by the lawyers.
