The South African Football Players Union confirmed that Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25,
Adams started two of South Africa's three group matches in the FIFA World Cup. He also came off the bench in a 1-0 win over South Korea on 24 June, a result that secured South Africa's place in the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.
He was an unused substitute when South Africa were knocked out of the tournament by Canada on 28 June.
In a statement, the South African Football Players Union said Adams had represented his country with pride, courage and distinction at the FIFA World Cup.
The union extended its condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and everyone affected by his death.
It said South African football had lost a gifted player, a devoted servant of the game and a young man whose future held great promise.
