Sardar Akhtar Mengal’s resignation from the National Assembly has been officially accepted, over 17 months after he first submitted it.
The decision now clears the way for a by-election in NA-256 Khuzdar.
The National Assembly Secretariat has informed the Election Commission of Pakistan that Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has formally accepted the resignation of BNP chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal.
Sources confirmed that the acceptance applies retroactively from September 3, 2024, the date when Mengal had originally submitted his resignation.
Despite his resignation, Mengal continued to exercise all privileges as a National Assembly member until January 2026, according to sources.
NA-256 Khuzdar seat now vacant
With the acceptance of Mengal’s resignation, the NA-256 Khuzdar seat is now officially vacant. The Election Commission is expected to announce a schedule for a by-election in the constituency within the next three months, ensuring the voters of Khuzdar will soon elect a new representative.
Mengal had been elected from NA-256 Khuzdar-1 in February 2024, representing the Balochistan National Party in the National Assembly.
