A police patrol came under attack in Bannu on Monday, triggering a fierce gun battle that left two militants dead, while a separate blast damaged a key communication bridge in another part of the district.
The incident occurred within the limits of Domail police station when unknown attackers opened indiscriminate firing on a police mobile van during a routine patrol on Company Road. Police responded swiftly, preventing further casualties.
A heavy exchange of fire between police and terrorists continued for about 20 minutes, officials said. As a result of the effective police operation, two Khawarij were killed, and weapons were recovered from their possession.
Following the attack, APC, QRF and RRF contingents from Police Lines Bannu immediately reached the site to support the ongoing operation. Security was tightened in the surrounding areas.
Police cordoned off the area and initiated a search and clearance operation to ensure no remaining attackers were present. Authorities said efforts were underway to secure the locality and restore normalcy.
Explosives destroy bridge
In a separate development, terrorists blew up a communication bridge using explosives within the limits of Merian police station. Police said explosives had been planted near Khesoor Bridge, leading to a heavy explosion that damaged the structure.
Police have launched investigations into both incidents and are assessing links between the attack on the patrol and the bridge explosion. Security across the district has been heightened following the incidents.
