The Meteorological Department has strongly denied circulating claims of an extreme cold wave later this month, urging the public not to rely on unverified social media forecasts.
The Meteorological Department clarified that no historic or severe cold spell is expected between January 16 and January 25. Officials said reports suggesting an unusual plunge in temperatures are not based on official forecasts.
According to the department, there is no indication of temperatures dropping below zero in the plains during this period.
Social media claims misleading
Authorities noted that unconfirmed weather forecasts are being widely shared on social media platforms. These claims allege that a powerful cold wave will grip large parts of the country, including plain areas.

The Meteorological Department categorically rejected these reports, calling them misleading and inaccurate.
Rely on official updates
The department urged citizens to follow weather updates issued only through official channels. It warned that spreading unverified information can cause unnecessary panic and confusion.
Officials reiterated that routine winter conditions are expected, with no extraordinary cold event forecast from January 16 to 25.
Karachi, Lahore cold spell to continue
Meanwhile, the mercury in Karachi has dropped to single digits, bringing slightly colder and drier weather to the city. According to the Met Department, the cold spell is expected to continue for a few more days.
The minimum temperature in Karachi was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, while the humidity level stood at 40%, adding to the dry conditions.

Separately, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert due to dense fog in Lahore and several other districts of Punjab until Jan 16. The Met Department said the weather will remain dry over the coming days, with temperatures expected to fall further.
Foggy conditions have been reported in Lahore and surrounding areas, with authorities warning that fog intensity may increase further until January 16. Cold winds continue to blow across the city, and a further drop in temperature is likely in the next few days.
