The government is all set to give another shock to the poverty-stricken electricity consumers across the country.
It is expected to raise the electricity cost by up to Rs1.70 per unit under quarterly adjustment.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is hearing a plea filed by distribution companies regarding July-September adjustments. To ensure a uniform tariff, the quarterly adjustment will also be applicable to electricity consumers in Karachi.
The distribution companies have sought an increase for the first quarter of the current financial year. After approval, there will be an additional burden of Rs22.9 billion on the consumers.
According to NEPRA officials, the collection will be made in the bills of December, January, and February that will lead to an increase of Rs1.25 per unit in the power tariff.
A NEPRA case officer said electricity purchase decreased by 9% in July, August, and September. The distribution companies bought 38 billion units of electricity instead of 42 billion units.
Nepra will take a final decision on the price hike after hearing the application.
According to the plan shared, over Rs12.126 million is expected to be recovered under capacity charges, RsRs10.247 million under use of system charges, Rs4.617 billion for operation and maintenance, and Rs6.61 billion under losses incurred.
