While fruits are often viewed as a healthy option for breakfast or light meals, they also provide essential vitamins, fibre and nutrients that support overall well-being.
Although citrus fruits such as oranges, known for their high vitamin C content, or pomegranates, valued for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, are frequently considered among the most beneficial, a lesser-known fruit has surpassed them in nutritional rankings. Scoring 96 out of 100, cherimoya has been named one of the world’s most nutritious foods.
Sometimes referred to as custard apple, cherimoya is recognised for its creamy texture, which resembles custard. According to the BBC, the fruit is conical in shape, green in colour, and features a rough outer skin. Inside, it reveals a sweet, soft flesh often eaten with a spoon.
The health website Healthline highlights cherimoya’s rich content of antioxidants, fibre, vitamins and minerals, all of which contribute to various health benefits. Research suggests that the fruit may help strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support heart and eye health.
However, some parts of the cherimoya plant contain toxins that may affect the nervous system if consumed in large quantities, prompting caution in intake.
Cherimoya is also a notable source of vitamin B6, which has been associated with improved mood. In addition, its high fibre content supports digestive function and gut health.
The fruit contains flavonoids – compounds that studies have shown to possess anti-cancer properties. Laboratory research indicates that these compounds can inhibit the growth of cancer cells under controlled conditions.
