The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert as heavy rains are forecast across several parts of Pakistan between August 13 and 15.
Authorities warn of potential urban flooding, rising river flows, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Rivers and dams near capacity
According to the NDMA spokesperson, water levels are expected to rise in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, with low to medium floods likely at Taunsa, Guddu, Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad barrages.
Medium to high flows are also forecast in Nullah Dek, Nullah Ek, Palkhu, Hadiyara, Ben, and Basantar streams. The situation is compounded by dam capacities, with Tarbela Dam at 96% full and Mangla Dam at 64% full.
Punjab and Islamabad on alert
Heavy showers are likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot from August 13 to 15, raising the risk of urban flooding in major Punjab cities. NDMA has advised residents and local authorities to remain vigilant.
Landslide and flash flood threat in north
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, intense rainfall could trigger landslides in mountainous regions and flash floods in the Kabul and Swat rivers and their tributaries.

Similarly, Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche districts in Gilgit-Baltistan may face floods due to heavy rain and melting glaciers, increasing flows in the Hunza, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Baraldo, and Saltoro rivers.
NDMA’s preparedness measures
The NDMA stated it is in continuous coordination with relevant federal and provincial agencies to monitor the situation and respond swiftly to emergencies. Residents in high-risk areas are urged to take precautionary measures and follow official advisories.
Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast an increase in monsoon activity next week, with rains expected in Islamabad, Kashmir, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan from August 14 to 17.
The Met Office also predicted heavy downpours in some areas during this period. From August 18 to 21, rainfall is likely to continue in parts of Kashmir, while more showers are expected in various districts of Punjab, Balochistan, and KP.
Authorities have also cautioned about potential damage to weak infrastructure and the uprooting of trees.
