Despite spending billions of rupees annually on its immunization program, Pakistan has not yet achieved 100 percent vaccine coverage for children.
According to the Director General of Immunization, even major global health programs have not fully reached this target.
Latest official data shows Islamabad and Punjab leading with 90 percent coverage, followed by Sindh at 84 percent, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 79 percent, and Balochistan lagging behind with just 54 percent.
Dr. Sofia, DG Immunization, said the program’s coverage has gradually improved over the years. “A few years ago, our national average was around 54 percent. Now we are aiming to push beyond 95 percent,” she added.
District Health Officer Dr. Rashida Syed highlighted Islamabad’s strong performance. “We have crossed 90 percent due to consistent efforts and strong political support. With continued dedication, we hope to eventually reach full coverage,” she said.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, stressed the need for sustained efforts, particularly in underperforming provinces.
“While Punjab is close to the target, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan still face serious gaps. Sindh is making efforts, but until every province reaches at least 90 percent, disease control will remain a challenge,” he said.
