World Hypertension Day is being marked across the globe today to raise awareness about high blood pressure and its serious health risks.
Speaking on Samaa TV, Executive Director Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) Prof Dr Bilal Mohiuddin described high blood pressure as a “silent killer”. He shared key preventative measures and health advice for the public.
“One in four individuals over the age of 40 suffers from hypertension,” said Prof Mohiuddin. He warned that persistently high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
Prof Mohiuddin highlighted that blood pressure levels exceeding 140 mmHg should be treated with medication. He said: "Constant stress, work pressure, and obesity are major contributing factors to rising blood pressure. Among the youth, smoking and the use of vapes are leading causes of hypertension."
"The rise in artificial lifestyles has significantly increased the number of patients with high blood pressure. To keep blood pressure under control, at least 30 minutes of daily exercise is essential."
He advised people to reduce intake of salt, ghee, and cooking oil, and to avoid spicy food.
Prof Mohiuddin also recommended a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to maintain cardiovascular health.
