British actress Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the original U.K. version of The Office, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with incurable stage 4 breast cancer.
The 53-year-old actress said she received the diagnosis about 18 months ago after discovering a small hard spot on her breast. She said the cancer has since metastasised to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs.
Davis revealed her diagnosis in an Instagram post on Tuesday, August 11, accompanied by a video of her ringing a hospital cancer treatment bell and reciting a poem commonly used to mark the end of treatment.
She explained that the initial abnormality was extremely small and that she almost did not have it checked. Davis urged others not to ignore changes in their bodies and to get anything unusual examined.

According to Davis, doctors determined that the cancer was incurable and that it was too late for chemotherapy.
‘I’m trying to live’ with as much fun as possible
Despite the diagnosis, Davis said she is trying to make the most of whatever time she has left and remains grateful for the lessons she has learned from the experience.
She said humour has been particularly important to her. Davis asked her friends and family to continue making fun of her and, most importantly, not to treat her as though she is a sick person.
“There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell,” she wrote.
Davis also revealed that pain can sometimes make standing and walking difficult, meaning she uses a wheelchair at times. Maintaining her characteristic humour, she joked that people who see her using one should feel free to give her a push.
Davis says she's at peace
The actress said she is not afraid of what comes next and that she is at peace with her situation.
Davis also reflected on her late dog Gracie, saying she believes she will see her sooner than expected and that leaving her physical body would, for her, mean “going home.” She added that any grief would be harder for her family than for her.
Alongside her personal journey, Davis said she intends to continue her work supporting animal rights, an issue she described as extremely important to her.
Davis also made clear that she does not intend to give up her career. She said she is still capable of working and that acting remains one of the biggest joys in her life.
Addressing people going through similar experiences, she acknowledged that cancer demands a great deal physically and mentally, while emphasizing that everyone has the right to face the journey in their own way.
From ‘The Office’ to ‘Wonder Woman’
Davis became widely known for portraying Dawn Tinsley, the receptionist at Wernham Hogg, in the original British The Office, which ran for two series between 2001 and 2003.
Her slow-burning romance with Martin Freeman’s Tim Canterbury became one of the show's most memorable storylines. Their relationship eventually reached a happy conclusion in the Christmas special finale.
Dawn's character later became the inspiration for Jenna Fischer's Pam Beesly in the American adaptation of The Office, which premiered in 2005.
Davis is the daughter of British comedian Jasper Carrott. Beyond The Office, she appeared as Dianne in the 2004 horror-comedy Shaun of the Dead and played Etta Candy in the 2017 superhero film Wonder Woman.
Her other credits include Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Better Things, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Disney’s The Villains of Valley View, the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and the long-running radio drama The Archers.
Davis has also continued to be remembered for the subtle performance that made Dawn a fan favourite, with Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook recently revisiting The Office in the BBC programme Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman Remember... The Office.
