Google’s Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for the company’s artificial intelligence push and putting the chatbot on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in terms of monthly users.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, describing Gemini as one of the company’s fastest-growing products.
The milestone makes Gemini the 14th Google product to reach 1 billion users.
Gemini closes gap with ChatGPT
Gemini’s latest user figure comes shortly after OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in June.
Google has been expanding Gemini across its ecosystem, integrating the AI assistant into products including Search, Workspace, Android and its standalone mobile app.
The latest figure, however, specifically refers to the Gemini app and does not include users accessing Google’s AI features through other products.
Google’s AI Mode in Search has also surpassed 1 billion monthly active users globally.
Voice and image generation drive Gemini use
Google also shared details about how users are interacting with Gemini.
According to the company, 63% of Gemini users use the assistant’s voice feature to communicate with it.
Gemini is also generating more than 150 million images every day, highlighting the growing use of generative AI beyond traditional text-based conversations.
The company said the chatbot has more than 100 million active users on iOS, showing strong adoption beyond Google’s Android ecosystem.
Google expands Gemini AI capabilities
Google has continued releasing new Gemini models and features as it competes with OpenAI and other AI companies.
The company recently introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash, which it says is designed to improve coding capabilities and autonomous AI-agent tasks.
The latest milestone follows Google’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, when the company reported more than 950 million monthly Gemini users, with daily active users having tripled over the previous year.
Google is also expected to showcase additional Gemini-powered features for its Pixel devices at its upcoming Made by Google event.
The rapid growth underscores Google’s effort to make Gemini a central part of its products as the competition for dominance in consumer AI intensifies.
