OpenAI has launched an official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, bringing its AI chatbot and coding tool Codex to a platform that users have long requested.
The Linux version was released worldwide this week as a preview, extending OpenAI’s desktop offerings across major operating systems.
“Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app,” OpenAI said in announcing the launch.
ChatGPT, Work and Codex included
The new Linux app allows users to access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex directly from their desktops.
OpenAI said the preview currently supports several major Linux distributions, including Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.
Although Linux has hundreds of distributions, the supported versions serve as foundations for numerous downstream distributions and desktop flavours, meaning the app could potentially work across a broader range of Linux environments.
The launch gives Linux users a dedicated desktop experience instead of relying solely on web browsers or third-party solutions to access ChatGPT.
OpenAI follows Anthropic into Linux
OpenAI's move comes about a month after rival AI company Anthropic launched a Claude desktop app for Linux.
Anthropic's Linux application supports Ubuntu 22.04 and later versions as well as Debian 12 and later.
The arrival of official desktop applications from major AI companies marks a growing push to make AI assistants available across different operating systems, including platforms widely used by developers and open-source communities.
With the Linux preview, OpenAI now offers desktop access to ChatGPT across the three major desktop operating-system ecosystems: Windows, macOS and Linux.
