The Punjab Law Department has issued a new ordinance sharply increasing traffic fines across the province, following formal approval from the governor.
The updated penalties target speeding, signal violations, overloading, and environmental violations by smoke-emitting vehicles.
Officials say the revision aims to improve road safety and curb traffic law violations by introducing stricter financial deterrents.
Higher fines for speeding violations
Under the new ordinance, speeding fines have been increased across all vehicle categories:
-
Motorcycles will be fined Rs2,000 for speeding.
-
Motorcars will be fined Rs5,000 for speeding.
Authorities say the enhanced fines are intended to discourage the rising trend of reckless driving, especially in urban centres.
Strict penalties for violating traffic signals
The new rules introduce even tougher penalties for signal violations:
-
Three-wheelers: Rs3,000
-
Cars: Rs5,000
-
2,000cc vehicles: Rs10,000
-
Vehicles over 2,000cc: Rs15,000
The government says heavier penalties for larger vehicles reflect their greater potential risk on the road.
Fines increased for overloading
Overloading fines have also seen a substantial hike:
-
Three-wheelers: Rs3,000
-
Vehicles under 2,000cc: Rs5,000
-
Vehicles over 2,000cc: Rs10,000
-
Trailers: Rs15,000
Transport officials say overloading significantly increases the risk of accidents and infrastructure damage.
Penalties for smoke-emitting vehicles
To address environmental concerns, the ordinance also specifies fines for vehicles emitting excessive smoke:
-
Motorcycles: Rs2,000
-
Three-wheelers: Rs3,000
-
Large vehicles: Rs8,000
-
Transport vehicles: Rs15,000
The government hopes this measure will help reduce air pollution in major cities.
The ordinance marks one of the most extensive revisions to Punjab’s traffic fine structure in recent years. Officials believe the new penalties will encourage compliance, reduce accidents, and support ongoing environmental and road safety initiatives.
