The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to provide free Wi-Fi services across the city, starting with 30 key locations. The initiative aims to make Islamabad a digitally connected “Free Wi-Fi City".
Free Wi-Fi in first phase
The decision was taken during an important meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa. In the first phase, free internet access will be available at metro and feeder bus stations, public parks, and other major public spaces.
Collaboration with NTC
Chairman Randhawa said the CDA’s technical team will assist the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) in setting up the system. However, the operation and maintenance of the free Wi-Fi network will be handled entirely by NTC.
Revenue model for sustainability
To ensure long-term sustainability, the CDA chief directed the development of a marketing model for the free Wi-Fi system. He explained that any revenue generated will be spent on system repairs and upgrades, keeping the service reliable for citizens.
Vision for digital capital
Randhawa emphasized that the initiative is part of the CDA’s broader vision to transform Islamabad into a fully connected smart city. “Islamabad will soon be turned into a ‘Free Wi-Fi City,’ offering modern digital facilities to its citizens,” he announced.
