Starfish Neuroscience, a brain-computer interface (BCI) startup founded by Valve CEO Gabe Newell, is set to launch its first neural chip by the end of 2025.
This innovative device is poised to compete directly with Neuralink, the brain-chip venture by Elon Musk, and could revolutionize the way humans connect with machines.
Starfish’s brain chip stands apart from conventional implants by being entirely cordless, battery-free, and minimally invasive. It can interact with multiple areas of the brain simultaneously, offering a major leap in neurotechnology. Operating on a remarkably low 1.1 milliwatts of power, the chip avoids overheating and does not require bulky external gear, making it more practical and comfortable for users.
The primary aim of this neural chip is to treat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and other movement disorders. However, Gabe Newell has repeatedly hinted that its potential applications extend far beyond healthcare.
Newell’s interest in BCIs dates back over a decade when Valve explored ways to merge neurotechnology with gaming to enhance player experiences. At the time, the technology was still in its infancy, but Newell believed that one day, players could “edit” their emotions and immerse themselves in virtual environments like never before.
Founded in 2019, Starfish Neuroscience is now emerging from stealth mode and seeking partnerships with companies that specialize in custom interface hardware, low-latency communication, and wireless power solutions. They aim to expand the chip’s applications from clinical settings to consumer experiences, ultimately creating seamless human-machine interactions.
Experts are optimistic that Starfish’s neural chip could mark a new chapter in human-computer interaction, blending medical breakthroughs with entertainment and productivity enhancements. While the initial rollout will target the medical community, the long-term vision includes using the chip to control prosthetic limbs, help paralyzed patients regain function, and offer gamers an entirely new sensory experience.
