The Afghan currency Afghani is the best-performing currency of the third quarter of 2023. It has jumped 9% against the US dollar since July 1.
This means that the Afghani is the third-strongest performing currency of 2023 so far, behind only the Colombian peso and the Sri Lankan rupee.
In Afghanistan, people buy and sell foreign currency at money exchange shops called sarrafs.
Sarrafs are everywhere, in markets and shops in cities and villages.
The biggest sarraf market is in Kabul, called Sarai Shahzada. It is like the financial centre of Afghanistan, where thousands of dollars are traded every day.
The central bank says there is no limit to trading.

Around 79% of the population live in poverty, and 44% of people don't have enough food to eat.
