International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Officer Sanjog Gupta has stressed the need to end bilateral series in cricket.
Gupta said cricket should move away from bilateral series played without a clear purpose or proper structure. In an interview with Indian media, he said One-Day cricket needed to be linked with attention, tradition, competition and intense contests.
He said the future of the format should be closely linked to the men’s and women’s World Cups. He also said its structure and scope needed improvement over time.
One-Day cricket has faced difficulties in recent years because of the growth of T20 leagues and the World Test Championship. Former South African captain Graeme Smith and Jonty Rhodes have also expressed concern over the declining role of bilateral ODI series.
