Bangladesh seized control of the opening day against Australia in Darwin after Hasan Mahmud took six wickets for 55 runs to bowl the hosts out for 198, before the visitors reached 96 for one at close.
Australia, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, struggled against the Bangladesh's disciplined pace attack on a surface with about 4mm of grass. Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed kept the Australian batters under pressure throughout the innings.
Steven Smith provided the main resistance with 71 from 109 balls, including seven fours and one six. He was the only Australian top-order batter to make a substantial score as Hasan Mahmud removed Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Smith and Nathan Lyon.
Weatherald made 23 before he edged Hasan Mahmud to wicketkeeper Litton Das, while Head fell for 22 two overs later. Marnus Labuschagne made only one before Ebadot Hossain took his wicket, and Cameron Green was dismissed for 13 by Taskin Ahmed.
Smith reached his 45th Test fifty before Hasan Mahmud dismissed him for 71 in the 51st over. Lyon was the final wicket to fall, giving Hasan Mahmud his sixth wicket and leaving Australia all out for 198 in 53 overs.
Bangladesh made a strong reply before stumps. Shadman Islam was dismissed for 20 by Mitchell Starc, but Tanzid Hasan remained unbeaten on 32 and Mominul Haque on 35.
Bangladesh finished the day on 96 for one from 24 overs, only 102 runs behind Australia, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and the rest of the batting order still to come.
The performance marked a remarkable turnaround for Bangladesh, who lost by an innings to a Cricket Australia XI last week.
Bangladesh's six wickets were all taken by pace bowlers, only the second time the country's fast bowlers have taken all ten wickets in a Test innings.
