The government has increased the price of jet fuel for commercial aircraft by Rs40.35 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs291.55 per litre, according to aviation sources.
The latest increase comes amid a sharp rise in global crude oil prices driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly between the United States and Iran.
With aviation fuel accounting for a significant share of airline operating costs, industry officials say the increase is likely to put upward pressure on domestic and international airfares in the coming weeks.
According to aviation sources, jet fuel prices have increased by Rs53.58 per litre over the past two weeks, reflecting the continued volatility in international energy markets.
The latest adjustment follows a surge in global oil prices after concerns over potential disruptions to supplies through key shipping routes in the Middle East.
Industry experts said airlines are expected to review their operating costs following the increase, with passengers likely to bear part of the additional financial burden if carriers revise ticket prices.
The aviation sector has already been facing mounting operational expenses due to fluctuating fuel prices, currency depreciation and higher maintenance costs.
