Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has lauded the people for observing a ‘safe Basant’ in Lahore, saying the festival passed without major incident.
She made the remarks at the inauguration of the Khelta Punjab Pink Games at Punjab Stadium, Lahore.
The chief minister said the government had moved children away from mobile phones and provided them with opportunities to display their abilities. She declared the current year as the ‘year of youth’.
She said a woman can run the country, the province, parliament and even the police force. "Women can give men a tough time and must not lose heart in difficult circumstances and challenges," she said.
CM Maryam said her responsibility was not limited to building roads and hospitals, though such projects were under way. She stated that rape cases in Punjab had declined by 72 per cent.
She said 60 per cent of recipients under the Honhaar Scholarship programme were girls, adding that with modest effort girls could conquer the world.
Referring to Basant, she asked the audience to note how the people of Punjab celebrated the festival. She said not a single motorbike was seen without a safety rod installed.
