The federal government and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government have aligned on the counter-terrorism in a high-level meeting, which was held at the Corps Headquarters in Peshawar to review the overall security situation in the province.
The meeting was attended by Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, the national security adviser, the Peshawar corps commander, and senior civil and military officials.
During the meeting, tribute was paid to civilians and security personnel who were martyred in terrorist incidents. It was decided that Pakistan Super League matches scheduled for this year would be held in Peshawar.
The meeting also decided that a governance model under the direct supervision of the provincial police and other provincial institutions would be implemented immediately in Malakand Division. Following its success, the model will be introduced in phases in the affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly Khyber, Orakzai and Kurram.
To ensure effective monitoring of all development projects and to review any military operations in these districts, it was decided to establish a special sub-committee under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister. The committee will hold monthly review meetings.
The special sub-committee will include elected public representatives, the Corps Commander Peshawar, the Chief Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, provincial officials, and representatives of federal institutions.
The meeting decided that the committee would oversee governance and development projects in the districts, create alternative employment opportunities to ensure sustainable livelihoods for local residents, and make effective arrangements to address the issues of temporarily displaced persons.
Through effective coordination between the federal government and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, complete policy harmony and a unified stance will be ensured to address the challenge of terrorism. Sustainable employment opportunities will be created to prevent extremist tendencies among youth and promote positive thinking.
The meeting further decided to continue strict action against illegal activities, including unlawful SIM cards, explosives and extortion. Phased profiling of non-custom paid vehicles will also be undertaken.
