A 41-year-old Mumbai Police constable died after suddenly falling ill while posted outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in Bandra, police said on Saturday.
The constable, identified as Ganesh Rayte, was part of the LA-4 squad and was performing security duty outside Galaxy Apartments when he reportedly collapsed on Friday evening.
According to initial reports, Rayte was stationed outside Salman Khan’s Bandra residence at around 6pm on Friday when he suddenly became unwell and lost consciousness.
Other police officers immediately rushed him to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where doctors declared him dead.
Suspected heart attack
Police are awaiting medical examinations and official reports to determine the exact cause of Rayte’s death. However, initial indications suggest that he may have suffered a heart attack.
The sudden death has also raised concerns within the police department about the health and working conditions of officers assigned to sensitive security duties, where personnel may have to work long hours while maintaining constant vigilance.
Security residence remains tight
Security outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments residence was significantly strengthened in 2024 following threats reportedly linked to jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and a firing incident outside the actor’s home in April that year.
Mumbai Police subsequently increased surveillance around the building, deployed additional personnel and tightened security arrangements in the surrounding area.
Investigation and formalities
Police are currently completing the required paperwork, including medical reports and other documentation related to the constable’s death.
Senior police officials are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Rayte’s sudden death. Meanwhile, officers and colleagues have expressed their condolences to his family as authorities await the final medical findings.
