Google has taken a pointed swipe at the design of rival smartwatches in its latest teaser for the Pixel Watch 5, just days before the company’s upcoming launch event.
The teaser keeps much of the watch in shadow but highlights its Gemini AI integration and features such as fitness and sleep tracking, while a remark about competing smartwatch designs has drawn the most attention.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel 11 series on August 12 at its upcoming event.
The company has already released teasers for the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, building anticipation ahead of the launch.
The latest teaser focuses on the Pixel Watch 5, offering only a limited view of the device while showcasing some of its expected capabilities.
Google appears to target Apple Watch design
The most noticeable part of the teaser is a comment about the design of competing smartwatches.
The remark appears to be a direct reference to the Apple Watch, which has traditionally featured a rectangular case rather than the round shape commonly associated with conventional watches.
Google's apparent criticism suggests that the company is positioning the Pixel Watch 5 as a more traditional, watch-like alternative to Apple’s distinctive rectangular design.
Samsung could also be in Google's sights
The teaser could also be interpreted as a reference to Samsung’s smartwatch lineup, including models such as the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Galaxy Watch 9.
While Samsung’s watches have a more conventional appearance than the Apple Watch, some models use a rounded-square shape often described as a “squircle.”
As Google prepares to compete more aggressively with both Apple and Samsung in the smartwatch market, the Pixel Watch 5 appears to be emphasizing its own watch-inspired design.
Gemini AI and health features highlighted
Beyond the design jab, the teaser also puts the spotlight on the Pixel Watch 5’s connection with Gemini AI.
The video also showcases features related to fitness and sleep tracking, suggesting that artificial intelligence and health-focused capabilities will be important parts of Google’s pitch for the new smartwatch.
More details about the device, including its design and features, are expected to be revealed at Google’s August 12 launch event.
