England's poor form in one-day international cricket continued with a six-wicket defeat by the world's top-ranked ODI side, India, at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
The loss came three days after England moved above India to top the T20 international rankings. England have now lost 14 of their last 20 ODIs and are eighth in the world rankings, below Afghanistan.
"England are eighth in the world rankings and are playing like they are eighth," former England fast bowler Stuart Broad told Sky Sports.
"They need to get more experience into the roles of the players."
England captain Harry Brook selected five spin options but only three seamers for the match. As a result, Jofra Archer bowled most of his overs early in India's innings.
An extra seamer may have meant Liam Dawson missing out. However, the Hampshire all-rounder scored 68, his first ODI half-century, while Joe Root made an unbeaten 76. Their partnership helped England recover from 80 for five.
Root and Dawson, both experienced in domestic 50-over cricket, shared a stand of 121 to guide England to 258 before they were all out.
India chased the target despite losing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli within six deliveries.
Captain Shubman Gill led the chase with 80 from 75 balls before retiring hurt. Archer and Josh Tongue, England's only specialist fast bowlers, delivered 13 of the first 16 overs.
England need great pace to support Archer, Tongue
Broad said England need greater pace to support Archer, Tongue and leg-spinner Adil Rashid.
"After defeat at Edgbaston, there might be a shift in mindset towards playing another seamer," Broad said.
"Looking ahead to the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, it is the faster, taller bowlers who will make the difference.
"Taking 10 wickets in an ODI, particularly during the middle overs, is difficult.
"Archer is a natural wicket-taker and the best white-ball bowler we have.
"Tongue can take wickets. Rashid can take wickets. But I feel England need one more fast bowler to support that group.
Broad sees Curran not first-change seam bowler
"Sam Curran is a very good cricketer, but he is not a first-change seam bowler. England need someone who can bowl through the middle overs, use the short ball, move the ball off the seam and take wickets, so they do not have to rely on Archer all the time.
"Could that be Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson or Saqib Mahmood? England need to start testing those options now."
The second match of the three-match ODI series between England and India will be played in Cardiff on Thursday.
