In a landmark move aimed at improving religious tourism and infrastructure, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has decided to connect Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib with the motorway network.
The announcement was made during an NHA meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan.
In the meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan formally announced the construction of a new motorway to link two of the most sacred Sikh sites. The project will directly connect Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib with existing motorways, making travel safer, smoother, and more comfortable.
Guru Nanak Expressway
The minister revealed that the new motorway will be named the Guru Nanak Expressway. He described the initiative as another major gift for the Sikh community in Pakistan and pilgrims visiting from across the world.
Aleem Khan directed the NHA to immediately start construction work on the Sialkot–Kartarpur Motorway. According to the minister, beginning the project from Sialkot will also benefit several nearby cities.
The minister emphasized that the new motorway will make travel to Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib safer, more peaceful, and full of modern facilities. He said the improved infrastructure will significantly enhance the experience of Sikh pilgrims.
Hotels, rest areas, shopping malls
Aleem Khan announced that three-star, four-star, and five-star hotels will be constructed around the Guru Nanak Expressway. He further directed NHA to ensure the development of world-class rest areas and modern shopping malls along the route.
The minister said the project will gain global popularity and open new investment opportunities for the Sikh community. Advertisements will be launched in London, Canada, and the United States to encourage overseas Sikh investors to participate.
Presiding over the meeting, Abdul Aleem Khan instructed NHA to carry out global marketing of Sikh holy places. He also directed that these projects be included in international roadshows to promote religious tourism and foreign investment.
Benefits for connected cities
The Sialkot–Kartarpur Motorway will also benefit other connected cities. Citizens of Narang Mandi and Bado Malhi will gain improved access and economic opportunities due to enhanced connectivity, the minister said.
Calling the Nankana Sahib and Kartarpur motorway projects a game changer, Abdul Aleem Khan said the initiative would transform religious tourism infrastructure in Pakistan. He reiterated that NHA must ensure the highest construction standards for long-term impact.
