The Punjab government has allowed people experiencing mental stress or suicidal thoughts to contact a qualified psychologist by dialling the police helpline 15.
According to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (SCA), a dedicated facility has been introduced across Punjab for individuals suffering from severe mental pressure. In cases of hopelessness or suicidal thoughts, callers may dial 15 and seek support from a psychologist.
The Safe City Authority spokesperson said that callers facing acute mental stress should dial the police helpline 15 and press seven, after which the call is connected to a psychologist. The psychologist provides timely counselling to help the affected person avoid any extreme step.
Officials said that during the past year, 2,269 individuals were prevented from suicide or other harmful actions after contacting the helpline 15. Of the total calls received, 56 per cent were from men and 44 per cent from women.
