Buying second-hand mobile phones from online platforms or unregistered sellers may prove to be a shock or fraud, as police data reveals that tens of thousands of people in Lahore unknowingly used stolen devices over the past seven years.
According to records compiled by the Punjab Police mobile tracking unit, more than 35,000 people used stolen or snatched mobile phones in Lahore between 2018 and 2025. During this period, police recovered over 35,000 devices and initiated action against those found using them.
The figures highlight the scale of illegal trade in used mobile phones across the city.
Recovered phones worth over Rs 87.5m
Police officials said the total value of recovered mobile phones exceeds Rs87.5 million. In 2025 alone, more than 6,000 stolen or snatched mobile phones were traced, with their value estimated at over Rs15 million.
Last year’s recoveries underline the continued rise in mobile phone theft and resale.
Online buying increases risk
Police warned that citizens who purchase second-hand mobile phones online or from unregistered individuals face a high risk of buying stolen devices. Such purchases can lead to legal trouble, financial loss, and confiscation of the phone.
Officials advised consumers to remain cautious, especially when deals appear unusually cheap.
Authorities said a strategy has been formulated to take action against dealers involved in buying and selling unregistered or suspicious mobile phones. Websites and online platforms selling mobile phones and electronic devices are also being reviewed.
The aim, police said, is to curb the circulation of stolen devices and protect consumers.
Buy from authorized sellers
Police officials urged buyers and sellers to deal only with authorized and registered mobile phone dealers. They stressed that verifying phone ownership and IMEI details before purchase can help prevent losses.
Citizens were also encouraged to report suspicious sellers and cooperate with law enforcement to reduce mobile phone theft in the city.
