President Asif Ali Zardari extended on Thursday the New Year greetings to the nation and called for unity, democratic responsibility, and economic discipline.
In his message, the president said the country needs national integration, democratic accountability, and sound economic management. He urged citizens and political forces to unite again for the protection of the future. He said the world is facing wars, proxy conflicts, extremism, and economic uncertainty, and that unity, resolve, and creative thinking are required to meet these challenges.
President Zardari said priority should be given to productivity, exports, and inclusive growth. He stressed the need for investment in education, health, youth, and emerging technologies. He said political forces should play a constructive role in parliament, adding that this is a time to raise awareness, not to increase tension.
He said he is ready to lead the process of national reconciliation and to restore trust among democratic forces. He said Pakistan needs cooperation, not confrontation.
The president said national unity and the capability of the armed forces have ensured the defence of the country’s sovereignty. He said there would be no compromise on defence and that any threat would be met with full force. He said India’s use of water as a weapon is a violation of international law, and that Pakistan has the right to use all available means to address the issue.
