The Punjab government has finalized preparations for a province-wide crackdown on littering, with strict punishments set to take effect from January 1.
Authorities say the move aims to improve public health, protect the environment, and keep cities and towns clean.
Preparations for a tough anti-littering drive have begun across Punjab, with the provincial government announcing zero tolerance for burning or dumping garbage in public spaces. From January 1, violators will face heavy fines and prison sentences under the new enforcement regime.
Officials said the crackdown reflects the government’s resolve to deal firmly with those spreading garbage and polluting the environment.
Heavy fines, jail terms
Under the new measures, burning garbage will attract a fine of up to Rs500,000 and imprisonment of up to three years. The penalties are even harsher for burning tires, which will carry a fine of Rs500,000 and imprisonment of up to seven years.
Authorities said the overall punishment framework allows fines ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs500,000 and jail terms between three and seven years, depending on the nature of the violation.
The Punjab government has also outlined fines for different types of littering. Throwing garbage outside a house, shop, or factory will result in a fine of Rs25,000.
Similarly, dumping garbage into street or neighbourhood drains will be punished with a Rs10,000 fine, while throwing animal waste or remains will carry a fine of Rs50,000.
Enforcement teams across Punjab
To ensure effective implementation, the Punjab Authority for Suthra Punjab has formed dedicated enforcement teams. These teams will monitor streets, neighbourhoods, commercial areas, and industrial zones to ensure compliance with the new rules.
Officials said the teams will begin active operations from January 1, when the new fines and punishments officially come into force.
Provincial authorities described the upcoming operation as a major crackdown to keep Punjab clean. They stressed that those who burn garbage or throw waste in the open will now be dealt with strictly, without exceptions.
The government urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and adopt responsible waste disposal practices to avoid penalties and help improve environmental conditions across the province.
