The 78th Independence Day of Gilgit-Baltistan was celebrated on November 1 with great national enthusiasm across the region, including in Astore district.
The day marks the historic moment in 1947, when the people of Gilgit-Baltistan gained freedom from the Dogra Raj, paving the way to join Pakistan.
The main ceremony was jointly organized by the Pakistan Army and the district administration at Government Boys High School Eidgah. Citizens, students, and officials participated in large numbers, reflecting unity and deep respect for the sacrifices of the region’s freedom heroes.
A public holiday was observed throughout Gilgit-Baltistan to commemorate the day. Celebrations included flag hoisting ceremonies, rallies, and cultural programs organized at both government and private levels.
The day began with a salute at the Martyrs’ Memorial, followed by flag hoisting and recitation of Fateha for the martyrs and ghazis of the independence movement. The ceremony symbolized gratitude for those who fought for the liberation of Gilgit-Baltistan from Dogra rule.
Governor, CM lead main ceremony
At the main Independence Day ceremony held at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Gilgit, Governor Syed Mehdi Shah hoisted the national flag alongside Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan. A police contingent presented a salute during the flag hoisting.

Governor Shah also laid a wreath at the memorial and reaffirmed that the “gift of freedom is unforgettable.” He emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices that led to the region’s independence and its continued loyalty to Pakistan.
President Zardari honours GB legacy
President Asif Ali Zardari attended the special ceremony at Yadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Memorial) and inspected the parade. He expressed heartfelt emotions, declaring, “I feel Gilgit is my second home.”
The president praised the bravery of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, saying, “Your historical courage can never be forgotten. In 1947, you supported Pakistan by waging jihad.” He saluted the land and spirit of the people, emphasizing that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has always promoted love for Gilgit-Baltistan.
President Zardari also paid tribute to former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for their contributions to the region’s progress. He proposed that Gilgit-Baltistan should have its own airline to improve connectivity and tourism.
Regional and global issues
Addressing broader issues, President Zardari highlighted the plight of Muslims in India, stating, “The world knows what is happening to Muslims in India. The Muslim majority is being turned into a minority.”
He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering stance on Illegally Occupied Kashmir, calling for a resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with UN resolutions. He commended the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for standing “shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan for seven decades".
The president also underscored the transformative impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), noting that it has opened new avenues of development in the region. He expressed his determination to make Gilgit a center of prosperity and progress.
Chief Minister and military leadership praised
Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan reaffirmed that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have considered Pakistan their destination for 78 years. He saluted the courage of Field Marshal Asim Munir, pledging that the province would stand with the Pakistan Army against all forms of aggression.
He also assured that any conspiracy by Pakistan’s “eternal enemy” would be foiled through unity and resilience. The Chief Minister lauded the peaceful and patriotic nature of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and praised the political leaders who sacrificed for democracy and national stability.
