Summer fruits are an important source of nutrition during periods of high temperatures, as they contain large amounts of water, vitamins and fibre that help keep the body hydrated and replace lost fluids.
The health experts said the Mediterranean diet is one of the most widely recognised healthy diets in Europe and the Middle East. It is based on fruit, vegetables and fish, which help improve general health and protect against heart disease and diabetes.
They said eating fruit in summer is a dietary necessity because of its high water content, as well as vitamins and fibre, which help keep the body hydrated and replace fluids lost through rising temperatures. He also stressed the importance of drinking plenty of water alongside water-rich fruits.
However, health specialists have advise people to eat fruit in moderation, particularly those with diabetes, to avoid a rise in blood sugar levels.
They said the effect of fruit differs from person to person, depending on how the body responds and absorbs sugar. People with diabetes, or those who have high blood sugar levels, should therefore choose fruit carefully and check their blood sugar after eating it.
They added that some fruits, including grapes, mangoes and figs, may raise blood sugar levels in some people. They should therefore be eaten in moderation and not in excess.
They stressed that the best way to eat fruit during summer is to spread it throughout the day, with moderate portions taken two to four times a day rather than eating a large amount at one time. This approach helps provide nutritional benefits while reducing the effect on blood sugar levels.
