US President Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into the release of sensitive information about American military weapons and ammunition stockpiles during the ongoing war with Iran.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the US administration officials said President Trump directed a new investigation after information about Pentagon military reserves was leaked.
The report said the US administration is concerned over claims that some key American weapons and ammunition stockpiles have seen a significant decline during the war against Iran.
The Wall Street Journal reported that several reports in the US media in recent weeks have pointed to reductions in American military reserves, raising questions about the availability of missiles, air defence systems and other important military equipment.
However, the US administration has repeatedly maintained that America has the required military capabilities and resources to continue operations against Iran.
According to the report, information about falling weapons reserves has become a concern for President Trump because it could affect negotiations with Iran and America’s overall military position.
The Wall Street Journal said President Trump expressed anger over media reports about weapons stockpiles during private meetings with cabinet members and close advisers.
The report said Trump believes information about declining US military reserves could encourage Iran and create the impression in Tehran that Washington is not in a position to continue a prolonged conflict.
President Trump said such information could also weaken America’s position in negotiations with Iran, particularly at a time when Washington is pressuring Tehran to accept its conditions regarding the nuclear programme.
According to the Wall Street Journal, President Trump’s order for an investigation is part of efforts to prevent the release of sensitive military information and stop further details about US military capabilities during the Iran war from becoming public.
