Tokyo police have arrested a 32-year-old woman, Mayo Yoshida, for repeatedly placing and cancelling large numbers of orders on a well-known online store.
According to Japanese media reports, the woman used fake names and around 230 fraudulent accounts to place more than 2,000 fake orders on the online store of Japan’s famous anime company, Shueisha.
The orders included toys and products linked to popular anime series such as ‘Naruto’ and ‘One Piece’, with a total value of around 4.3 billion yen, equal to about 2.7 million US dollars or more than 750 million Pakistani rupees.
Police said the woman selected cash on delivery as the payment method for all orders. When the items reached her address, she refused to accept the deliveries or pay for them. In some cases, she cancelled the orders before the items were dispatched.
The unusual activity caused the company a loss of about $47,500 in delivery and courier expenses.
