A man accused of murder broke into the home of a young mother and fatally stabbed her while she slept in bed with her husband and three-month-old baby, a court heard.
Daniel Sean James, 46, allegedly attacked 24-year-old Kirandeep Kaur at her home in Hayes, west London, on the morning of July 12.
James allegedly tried to flee by jumping from a window and broke both ankles before police detained him nearby, according to the criminal court proceedings.
Before the incident, James allegedly crossed a sports field in Hayes wearing black clothing and carrying a large knife. At about 7.51am, he allegedly kicked open the door of Kaur’s home, where she lived with her husband and baby, and entered while the family slept.
Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall told the court that Kaur’s husband woke after hearing his wife scream and saw a person leaving the bedroom.
Two minutes later, James allegedly left the Uxbridge Road property by jumping from a kitchen-living room window, the court heard. Although he broke both ankles in the fall, he allegedly tried to run but collapsed about 10 metres away.
Kaur suffered a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 8.26am.
James was later charged with the murder of Kaur, attempted murder and possession of a blade.
The accused appeared at the Central Criminal Court of England on Thursday. The judge set a plea hearing for October 1 and a provisional three-week trial beginning on April 5 next year.
