Basant returned to Lahore after nearly two decades, but the joy of the festival was once again overshadowed by accidents.
The much-anticipated three-day Basant festival began at midnight, with residents rushing to rooftops across the Walled City, particularly around Mochi Gate, to welcome the colourful celebration after years of absence. Cries of “Bo kata” rang out as kites filled the sky. Young participants learnt kite flying techniques from elders, while families gathered on rooftops, describing Basant as a festival that spreads love and warmth across the city.
However, violations of the Basant code of conduct were reported from the very start. Incidents of aerial firing were reported in parts of the Walled City, while unidentified individuals opened fire as celebrations began. Fireworks were also used at several locations despite official restrictions.
As the clock struck twelve, kite flying began in full swing near Mochi Gate. A large number of Lahore residents crowded rooftops to witness the vibrant display in the sky after a long gap. Basant events were also held in other parts of the city.
Several participants thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for allowing the festival to resume, while some residents claimed that government-issued standard operating procedures were being followed.
Six injured; one dead
Meanwhile, Basant-related accidents left six people injured and one person dead after midnight. The deceased lost his life while attempting to retrieve a kite tangled on an electricity pole.
Among the injured were three children. In Gulshan Ravi, eight-year-old Arha sustained neck injuries after kite string cut into her throat and was shifted to a nearby hospital. On Ravi Road, a man identified as Saqib was injured after falling from a rooftop. In the Lower Mall area, 12-year-old Abdul Wahid was hurt while chasing a kite. In another incident in Gulshan Ravi, 14-year-old Salman fell from a tree while attempting to retrieve a kite.
