Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of Siri, transforming it into an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT.
According to a Bloomberg report, the revamp could be unveiled as early as June at Apple’s annual developers conference.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a new version of Siri that functions as a full-fledged AI chatbot. Internally codenamed “Campos,” the assistant is expected to support both voice and text-based interactions.
The Siri chatbot is reportedly being developed for integration into iOS 27, making it one of Apple’s most significant software upgrades in recent years.
WWDC likely to be spotlight
Sources cited in the report say the revamped Siri could become the central focus of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
If announced, it would signal Apple’s formal entry into the AI chatbot race, where competitors like OpenAI and Google already have a strong presence.
Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi had previously said he did not want Siri to function as a chatbot. Instead, he emphasized AI features that are seamlessly integrated and available when needed.
However, the report suggests Apple’s approach has evolved, likely due to growing pressure from the rapid adoption of AI chatbots by rival tech companies.
Rising competitive pressure
Apple may also be reacting to potential competition from OpenAI, which is reportedly planning to enter the hardware market.
That effort is said to be led by Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer, adding to concerns within Apple about maintaining its dominance in consumer technology.
Apple’s struggles in AI race
The report notes that Apple has lagged behind competitors in artificial intelligence. The company delayed the launch of a “more personalized Siri” multiple times and spent much of last year evaluating AI technologies from firms including OpenAI and Anthropic.
Ultimately, Apple selected Google’s Gemini as its AI partner, a decision confirmed by both companies earlier this month.
If Apple moves ahead with a chatbot-style Siri, it would mark a significant change in strategy and could reshape how users interact with Apple devices.
The coming WWDC may offer clearer insight into whether Apple can close the gap with rivals and reposition Siri as a serious player in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
