The warm waters of Makran have become a new haven for humpback dolphins, as large pods were once again spotted frolicking along the eastern coast of Gwadar, offering a rare and heartening sight for local fishermen.
Early on Monday morning, a large pod of humpback dolphins was seen swimming and playing along the eastern coastline of Gwadar. The dolphins moved alongside fishing boats, leaping through the water and entertaining fishermen with their playful behavior.
Fishermen described the sight as both joyful and mesmerizing, with dolphins keeping pace with their boats for extended periods.
Over the past two months, pods of humpback dolphins have been observed in several coastal areas of Makran Coast, including Jiwani, Peshkan, Sarbandan and Gunz, in addition to Gwadar.
Local fishermen have been capturing these moments on their cameras, sharing visuals of the dolphins as they move freely across the region’s waters.
Friendly interaction with fishermen
Humpback dolphins are widely regarded as friendly toward humans. Fishermen say the dolphins often appear to play around boats, creating a pleasant and lively atmosphere at sea through their coordinated movements.
Their presence has added to the natural charm of Gwadar’s coastline, drawing attention from residents and nature enthusiasts alike.
According to Gwadar Development Authority, the sea around Gwadar had been experiencing an algal bloom for the past 10 days, which caused the water to turn green. Deputy Director (Environment) Abdul Rahim Baloch explained that algal blooms can temporarily affect marine conditions but also influence the movement of sea life.
Marine recovery
Baloch said the large number of dolphins indicates an abundance of food in the sea. He added that the dolphins’ return in significant numbers to Gwadar’s eastern waters suggests that the algal bloom has begun to subside.
“The presence of dolphins is a positive sign that the marine environment is recovering,” he noted, calling the development encouraging for Gwadar’s coastal ecosystem.
