One man was killed and several houses collapsed after an earthquake measuring 6.0 struck northwestern side of India-held Kashmir on Monday, according to officials and the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The EMSC said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers.
Strong tremors were felt across Gilgit-Baltistan, where several mud houses collapsed or were damaged, said Regional Information Minister Ghulam Abbas.
Heavy rocks dislodged by the quake struck multiple access roads and a major highway. Government agencies have deployed machinery to clear the blocked routes.
The deceased man was killed after being hit by a falling rock while traveling on a road, the minister confirmed.
Hunza: Houses damaged, roads blocked
The earthquake, which struck at around 11:30am, caused damage in the remote village of Charsan in Hunza. More than a dozen houses and livestock enclosures were damaged.
Two people sustained minor injuries, while landslides blocked the only link road connecting the village, cutting off access.
Residents have appealed to the district administration to restore the road urgently and provide assistance, especially as people remain stranded in severe cold weather.
Fatal landslide in Ghizer
In Ghizer district, a motorcycle rider was struck by a landslide in the Badsawat area of Ishkoman.
One young man died on the spot after being hit by a stone, while another was injured. The injured person was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Gahkuch for treatment.
Tremors felt in Peshawar, Swat and nearby areas
Residents of Peshawar and Swat reported earthquake tremors in the cities and their surrounding areas. People rushed out of homes and offices in fear as buildings swayed briefly.
No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were received from the cities.
