Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Junaid Akbar has confirmed that he has submitted his resignation to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) but the National Assembly Secretariat has yet to receive any formal communication regarding the matter.
Speaking to SAMAA TV, Junaid Akbar said, “I have resigned. I conveyed it to Barrister Gohar.”
However, he added that he had also requested Barrister Gohar to consult PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan on the matter.
“I have not been asked formally to resign yet,” he clarified, adding that he did not want the impression that holding the position was of personal significance to him.
Sources had earlier indicated that Imran Khan had instructed Mr Akbar to step down from the chairmanship of the PAC, with the message reportedly conveyed through the party leader’s sister, Aleema Khan.
Despite the development, a spokesperson for the National Assembly Secretariat said that no resignation had been received officially. “There is a formal procedure for resigning and approving the resignation of any member or chairman of a committee,” the spokesperson said.
He further said “The Secretariat will inform the Speaker once any progress is made in this regard.”
