The Supreme Court has issued its response to a letter written by incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan requesting to guarantee the protection and upholding of fundamental rights for every citizen.

The apex court says that it received a seven-page document on Dec 1, adding that the name and contact details of the lawyer who prepared the document were not mentioned.

It stressed that Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa can neither be pressurised nor will he favour anyone, but instead will continue to fulfil his duties as per his oath.

Supreme Court response to Imran Khan letter

The statement stated that it was surprising that the text of the sealed letter was already in the media even before it reached the court.

According to the envelope, the document was couriered by Intizar Hussain Panjotha, the lawyer of the PTI. “The document appears to have been sent by a political party,” it added.

It further said that lawyers have been representing the party well. A few days ago, the party's lawyers even took the military courts and the election cases to fruition in the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa is aware of his constitutional responsibilities, and he can neither be pressurised nor will he favour anyone.

The CJP will continue to perform his duties with the grace of God and according to his oath, as stated in the statement.

On November 30, Imran Khan addressed a letter to CJP Isa, imploring the Supreme Court to guarantee the protection and upholding of fundamental rights for every citizen.

The letter, supported by documentary evidence, highlighted concerns about the indiscriminate use of fake cases and arrests, particularly targeting individuals affiliated with the PTI.

In his letter, the former PTI chairman highlighted how important it was for the highest court to protect individuals’ fundamental rights and stop the abuse of legal processes, including false case registrations and arbitrary arrests. It underscored the need for intervention to address the various tactics employed to retaliate against PTI members.

The letter also argued that it would be difficult to hold a fair general election on February 8 without the involvement of the highest court. Khan urged to form a commission in this respect in order to guarantee an impartial and transparent electoral process.
