Israel has reportedly shared intelligence with the United States claiming that Iran recently devised a new plan to assassinate US President Donald Trump, according to reports by The Wall Street Journal and CNN.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Israel recently informed Trump that it had intelligence indicating Iran was planning an assassination attempt against him.
CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that the intelligence referred to a specific alleged plot and that the warning was delivered this week.
One source told CNN that while US intelligence agencies had detected a steady stream of information in recent weeks about potential threats against Trump, the Israeli warning concerned a new and more specific plan.
However, the report said US authorities had not independently verified the alleged plot, and two sources familiar with the matter said American intelligence agencies were not tracking it before receiving the Israeli warning.
Some US officials suggested the Israeli intelligence could also be part of a broader effort to influence Trump's decision-making as he considers whether to intensify US military action against Iran.
Trump says Iran wants to kill him
Asked about the reported warning, the White House referred to Trump's recent remarks at the NATO summit in Ankara.
"They want to take out the US leader — me," Trump told reporters.
"I'm on whatever list. I saw this morning I'm on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I've been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn't last very long. These are evil, sick people."
Trump also said he had recently learned of a new list ranking him as Iran's top assassination target, although it remains unclear whether he was referring to the intelligence reportedly shared by Israel.
Long-standing concerns
US officials have long warned that Iran could attempt to target Trump in retaliation for the 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
According to CNN, US intelligence agencies continue monitoring several actors who have discussed possible attacks on current and former American officials, although no action has been taken.
One intelligence source said some officials remain cautious about relying solely on Israeli intelligence and view the latest report within the broader context of Israeli efforts to shape US policy toward Iran.
Diplomatic efforts continue
The reports come amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran after both sides exchanged military strikes despite an earlier ceasefire agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly expressed skepticism about Trump's diplomatic engagement with Iran. The two leaders spoke by phone on Thursday, and Netanyahu is expected to visit Washington soon.
Despite Trump's recent statement that the memorandum of understanding with Iran was "over", US officials told CNN that diplomatic efforts toward a nuclear agreement are continuing behind the scenes, with negotiations aimed at reaching a deal by mid-August.
Neither the US government nor Iran has officially commented on the latest intelligence reports.
