France captain Kylian Mbappe has etched his name deeper into football history by breaking and equalling multiple FIFA World Cup records during the 2026 tournament, leading Les Bleus into the semifinals with another match-winning performance against Morocco.
Mbappe scored in France's 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Morocco, taking his remarkable World Cup tally to new heights while matching and surpassing several legendary milestones previously held by Lionel Messi, Just Fontaine, Olivier Giroud and Brazilian greats Ronaldo and Leonidas.
Mbappe became France's highest-ever goalscorer after surpassing Olivier Giroud's long-standing record during the tournament opener against Senegal.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward now has 64 international goals, ahead of Giroud (57), Thierry Henry (51) and Antoine Griezmann (44).
France's highest World Cup scorer
Mbappe also overtook French legend Just Fontaine to become his country's leading scorer at FIFA World Cups.
His goal against Senegal was his 14th at the tournament, breaking Fontaine's record of 13 goals scored during the 1958 World Cup.
Following his latest strike against Morocco, Mbappe has now scored 20 World Cup goals.
Mbappe's goal against Morocco saw him draw level with Lionel Messi for the most non-penalty goals in World Cup history.
Both superstars now have 17 non-penalty World Cup goals, highlighting Mbappe's consistency on football's biggest stage.
Most goals in World Cup knockout matches
The French captain has also become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout history.
His latest goal took his knockout-stage tally to 12, moving him ahead of Brazilian legends Ronaldo Nazario and Leonidas.
Mbappe's assist for Ousmane Dembele against Morocco made him the first player ever to register at least 11 direct goal contributions in two separate FIFA World Cups.
He previously recorded 10 goal contributions at the 2022 World Cup before surpassing that mark in 2026.
Joint-most World Cup appearances for France
The France captain has now equalled Hugo Lloris' record of 20 World Cup appearances for the national team.
At just 27, Mbappe is the youngest French player to reach the milestone and is expected to become the outright record holder if he features in the semifinal.
France secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Morocco to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals.
Mbappe opened the scoring after missing an early penalty before Ousmane Dembele sealed the win.
